A prominent British scientist, Darren Holling, aged 49, lost his life in a tragic explosion that occurred on a cargo ship in Malaysia. The incident took place while Darren was examining a fire onboard the vessel MSC Kyparissia, located in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the blast occurred suddenly while boxes were being unloaded, leading to the loss of three lives, including Darren’s.
In addition to Darren, Engineer Diaday Jason Hernia, aged 39 from the Philippines, and safety inspector Sugumaran Kolanthai, aged 59 from Malaysia, also tragically perished in the explosion. Two crew members and an inspector sustained injuries and were promptly transported to the nearest hospital for treatment.
The Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call at 12:23 pm on Friday, reporting the incident. Investigations revealed that the fire broke out during container unloading operations in Block 5 of the vessel. The tragic event claimed three lives and left three others injured, who were quickly taken to a private hospital for medical attention.
Following the incident, the ship, captained by Novak Petr from the Czech Republic, returned to the Port of Tanjung Pelepas for emergency assistance and further evaluation. Despite the unfortunate event, no hazardous or toxic gases were released as a result of the explosion and subsequent fire.
Darren, a distinguished chemical incident investigator with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Durham, was renowned for his work in analyzing fires, explosions, and chemical incidents across different regions. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and had conducted over 800 investigations worldwide before his untimely demise.
The Marine Department of Malaysia expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the situation was under control, with safety measures in place to prevent any further risks.
