Ocado to Cut 1,000 Jobs in £150 Million Cost-Saving Move

Date:

Ocado has announced intentions to cut approximately 1,000 jobs as part of a broader initiative to save £150 million. The online grocery retailer stated that the job reductions will impact about 5% of its workforce, with the majority affecting its operations in the UK, including the Ocado headquarters in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The company plans to streamline its research and development efforts by merging Ocado Solutions and Ocado Intelligent Automation into a unified division.

The layoffs do not impact the Ocado retail arm. This decision was disclosed alongside Ocado’s recent financial results, which revealed a significant profit increase. The company reported a 12.1% rise in group revenue to £1.36 billion for the year ending on November 30, 2025, with adjusted EBITDA climbing 59% to £178 million.

CEO Tim Steiner stated, “Our focus on research and development will prioritize areas with the most potential for value creation for Ocado and our partners. We are also restructuring parts of our organization to streamline our commercial strategy and simplify our operational framework as we expand into various international markets post the exclusivity agreements expiration. These adjustments will align with the reduced cost structure we have been signaling in recent years, unfortunately resulting in a significant reduction in roles.”

Ocado, established in 2000 by Tim Steiner, Jason Gissing, and Jonathan Faiman, former Goldman Sachs employees, offers a selection of approximately 50,000 products, including popular brands like M&S food alongside its own product line.
