“Grandmother on Death Row Returns to UK”

Date:

A 69-year-old grandmother who was sentenced to death row in Bali for smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into the country has returned to the United Kingdom.

Lindsay Sandiford, who was 56 at the time of her arrest, confessed to smuggling drugs into Indonesia in 2012. She claimed that she was coerced by an international drug syndicate that threatened her family if she did not comply. After being sentenced to death by firing squad the following year, she endured harsh conditions in prison until a humanitarian release deal was negotiated last month.

Following a 20-hour journey, including a layover, Sandiford arrived at London Heathrow Airport on a government-funded £600 ticket, marking her first time back on British soil in over ten years. She is reportedly eager to reunite with her family and receive urgent medical attention after her release was secured by the UK government.

According to a source, medical assessments have revealed that Sandiford is in poor health due to her lengthy incarceration in one of the most challenging prisons in the world. She expressed her eagerness to return home after bidding farewell to fellow inmates who had become like family to her.

Pastor Christine Buckingham, who visited Sandiford in Kerobokan jail recently, emphasized the urgency of getting Sandiford home for medical evaluation before spending quality time with her family.

Sandiford, who spent 13 years in custody with 12 on death row, was seen in a wheelchair as she left Bali’s Kerobokan jail for the first time. She shielded her face from photographers before boarding a Qatar Airways flight at Denpasar International Airport for her journey back to the UK.

Reports from Indonesia suggest that Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper personally appealed to Indonesian authorities for Sandiford’s release. Indonesian officials announced that upon her return to the UK, she may face further imprisonment, although the Foreign Office has not confirmed whether she will be taken into custody. Indonesia’s Deputy Minister for Immigration and Correctional Coordination stated that she would continue to be imprisoned in England.
