A sex offender identified as Brahim Kaddour-Cherif was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth, a high-security prison in London, on October 29. Kaddour-Cherif was serving time for trespass with intent to steal and had previous convictions for sexual offenses. The Metropolitan Police, stating he is of Algerian descent, is actively searching for him to return him to custody.
In a similar incident, Hadush Kebatu, a 38-year-old Ethiopian national, was released in error from HMP Chelmsford in Essex and later apprehended in London after spending three days at large. Kebatu had been serving a 12-month sentence for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman in Essex.
Labour MP Dr. Rosena Allin-Khan expressed shock at the news, emphasizing the need for accountability from the Government and Ministry of Justice regarding the oversight leading to these releases. Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that Kebatu would be deported, underscoring the necessity to prevent such occurrences in the future.
In another escape incident in September 2023, Daniel Khalife fled HMP Wandsworth by attaching himself to a food delivery van using bedsheets and was later captured in west London.
David Lammy criticized the mistaken release of foreign criminals wanted by the police, highlighting the need for improved victim protection and public safety measures. An independent investigation led by Dame Lynne Owens has been initiated to address the systemic issues within the criminal justice system.
