Approximately 150 corgis from various countries recently convened for an international race in Vilnius, Lithuania, to celebrate these small herding dogs hailing from Wales. Beyond showcasing short-legged agility, the event included a costume parade, a “smartest nose” challenge, and a spirited competition for the loudest bark.
Organizers labeled the fifth Corgi Race Vilnius as the largest gathering to date, with participants from nine countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and several European nations. The event’s growth was evident, starting from 40 corgis in its inaugural year to 150 corgis this year, with the inclusion of the breed’s homeland as a participant.
The main race featured 94 dogs competing in qualifiers, semifinals, and the final sprint of 25 meters. The victorious corgi, GG, representing the U.S., triumphed, with Mr. Corgington, another American entrant, coming in second, and Lithuania’s Moka securing third place.
In addition to the running competition, the event highlighted other talents of the corgis and their owners. A costume parade showcased 38 creatively attired corgis, while a “smartest nose” challenge tested the dogs’ treat-finding abilities. The competition also featured a contest to determine the corgi with the loudest bark, which was won by Mr. Corgington.
Notably, the event attracted both seasoned veterans and first-time participants, with six corgis, including Amigo, Foksas, and Madeira, having attended every edition. The day’s festivities underscored the growing popularity and international appeal of these beloved four-legged companions.
